The Writing Center (TWC) is the campus service that helps Old Dominion University students address writing questions, such as...

  • how do I start this paper?
  • am I fulfilling the assignment?
  • how effective is my approach to this text?
  • what will my audience think of what I have written?
  • what are the best strategies for passing the Writing Placement Exam and the Exit Exam of Writing Proficiency?
  • when I have a final draft, how do I revise and copyedit (i.e., fix the grammatical errors) this paper?

The Writing Center works with both undergraduate and graduate students in all disciplines to prepare them for the challenges of composing essay assignments, test preparation, seminar papers, theses, dissertations, and application materials. Please contact us for more information.

WC also helps instructors across the campus with the writing they ask students to do by giving presentations on writing issues and consulting with individual instructors. We also offer several workshops throughout the semester to help students on specific writing issues.

Message from the Director

The Writing Center, formerly known as Writing Tutorial Services (WTS) provides supplemental instruction to help students improve their writing strategies. Instead of providing a proofreading service, we offer tutoring sessions that assist students in learning to proofread their own work, in getting projects started, and in developing the writing process for a paper.

The Writing Center offers 50-minute appointments with graduate student tutors who work with individual students or with groups. Most tutoring sessions are by appointment; walk-in appointments are provided when tutors are not in a scheduled session. For distance students, we use Adobe Connect for online appointments. Students have the option of making standing appointments with tutors once per week for up to four weeks at a time. In addition to tutoring services for undergraduate and graduate students, we will visit classrooms to provide writing lessons and group tutorials.

Thank you for visiting the Writing Center at ODU.
