Writing Tutorial Services (WTS) is the campus service that helps Old Dominion University students address writing questions, such as...
- how do I start this paper?
- am I fulfilling the assignment?
- how effective is my approach to this text?
- what are the best strategies for passing the Writing Placement Exam and the Exit Exam of Writing Proficiency?
- what will my audience think of what I have written?
- when I have a final draft, how do I revise and copyedit (i.e., fix the grammatical errors) this paper?
Writing Tutorial Services also houses and supports the Graduate Writing Assistant Program (GWAP) who specifically helps graduate students in all disciplines with the challenges of composing seminar papers, theses, dissertations, and application materials. Please contact us for more information.
WTS also helps instructors across the campus with the writing they ask students to do by giving presentations on writing issues and consulting with individual instructors. We also offer several workshops throughout the semester to help students on specific writing issues.
Most students come to WTS for one-hour tutoring sessions that are structured to promote proficiency and learning for any stage of the writing process, including brainstorming, organization, development, revision, style, grammar, and punctuation. The policies for our students are...
- You cannot simply drop off your paper and pick it up later. Likewise, we will not just sign forms for extra credit. WTS offers a supplemental learning experience in which the tutors teach new strategies to approach your writing situations, such as teaching you how to proofread your own papers.
- We do not serve walk-ins unless a space is available. Due to the high volume of students we serve, the opportunity for a walk-in appointment can be rare; therefore we strongly encourage you to schedule your appointments in advance-please call 757.683.4013.
- Students who are over 10 minutes late will forfeit their appointments. If you do arrive late and a tutor is still available, the tutor has the discression to decide whether to proceed with the tutorial.
With these policies in mind, we recommend that you...
- Please call us 3-4 business days before you would like to come in and see us. We are often busy, and if you call for a same- or next-day appointment, chances are we won't be able to schedule you in.
- Please do not wait until the last minute to come see us. Conducting a tutorial mere hours before your paper is due is useful to no one.
