The Old Dominion University Women's Studies Department, the oldest in Virginia, was established in 1977. This dynamic interdisciplinary program of study offers degrees and courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. It sponsors a diverse range of events on campus in collaboration with other departments and local community organizations, including a regional conference, and a student essay contest. Through its community support group, Friends of Women's Studies, the Department offers scholarships for Women's Studies students and a community mentor program. The Department is committed to service-learning, having offered its first such course on South Africa in May 2007, and expects to expand its offerings locally and internationally in the near future.
