Academy of Music Program Evaluation (Tim Bostic, ODU and Academy of Music) – Focus groups with students, teachers, and parents of students at Parkview Elementary who participated in the Strings Program. The information from the interviews will be used to evaluate the Strings Program and gauge the impact on elementary school students. (January - August 2012)
3rd Annual Life in Hampton Roads (Office of Research, ODU) - Telephone survey utilizing both landline and cell phone numbers of residents throughout the Hampton Roads region. Topics include culture and tourism, transportation, education, health, crime, and life satisfaction. The goal of the survey is to provide a source of data through which faculty can compile pilot data to develop their research publications and extramural research grant proposals and to develop a baseline of social/economic indicators for use by community organizations. Legislative Sea Level Rise Survey (Burt Saint John III, Ivan Ash, Wie Yusuf, ODU) – Survey instrument development, web survey programming, and data collection to assess Virginia state legislator’s knowledge and awareness of flooding due to sea level rise and related policy effectiveness. The information will provide the foundation for further examination of legislators’ information seeking and decision making regarding policies pertaining to sea level rise. (January - September 2012)
CSEEP Survey of Program Participants (Stephen Tonelson, ODU Special Education Program) – Telephone and mail survey of graduates and former students of the ODU Special Education Program and the Commonwealth Special Education Endorsement Program. The purpose of the survey is to determine the impact of the program on the graduate’s career path and to assess the effectiveness of the program’s capability to prepare students for a successful career in special education. Vulnerable Populations Emergency Management Survey (Josh Behr, VMASC/ODU) – Telephone survey of Hampton Roads residents designed to assess various types of community vulnerabilities in the event of a hurricane or other similar natural disaster. The information will be used by emergency management officials to enhance the effectiveness of emergency planning efforts throughout the region. (February - October 2012)
2011
AccessEU Program Evaluation (Regina Karp and Larry Filer (ODU); The European Commission) – Development of program evaluation and data collection instruments, survey data collection, focus groups, data entry, data analysis, and reporting. Throughout this 18 month evaluation project, a total of ten AccessEU events were evaluated. Events included teacher seminars, speaker series, graduate courses, Model United Nations conference, and a study abroad trip. Data will be used to support future grants for similar European Union focused events. (Jan 2011- June 2012)
GSU Crime Victim’s Compensation Survey (Leah Daigle, Georgia State University) -- Telephone survey of victims of crime who applied for victim’s compensation in the state of Georgia. Data will be used by the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (CJCC) to help improve the application process by assessing gaps in service and identifying barriers to obtaining compensation in order to better provide for the needs of crime victims. (October 2011 - March 2012)
Political Polling Series (Jesse Richman, ODU) – Three separate state-wide telephone surveys of registered voters (including those that are likely to register) throughout Virginia. The data will be used to gain insight on the opinions of Virginians on various political, social, and economic issues. (July - August 2011, September - October 2011, May - June 2012)
Norfolk Flooding Survey (Maura Hametz, Poornima Madhavan, Leona Tom and Cynthia Tomovic, ODU) – Telephone survey of local residents designed to gauge the attitudes and experiences of flooding in the city of Norfolk. The results of this survey will be used by ODU faculty to develop educational approaches and materials. The results may also inform the local government and the business community how to better address flooding in the area. (October - December 2011)
City of Norfolk Youth Assessment Project (Randy Gainey and Ruth Triplett (ODU); Norfolk Department of Human Services) – A comparative assessment of youth violence and gang activity in Norfolk through the examination of community risk factors. Surveys and focus groups were conducted with Norfolk residents, community leaders and stakeholders to determine the availability of existing resources and identify community needs. (January – September 2011)
Brain Drain Survey (Greater Norfolk Corporation) – Web survey development, programming and administration, qualitative analysis of web survey results from young professionals in Hampton Roads. The information will be used to help inform local government and business communities on how to retain and attract talented young adults in Norfolk through various initiatives and improvements in the city. (November 2011 – March 2012)

2010
Alcohol Screening and Intervention Project (A-SIP) (James Neff, Michelle Kelley, Michele Darby, ODU) – Telephone survey of dental patients at baseline, three-month and six-month follow-up periods following a brief motivational interview intervention regarding alcohol use. Overall project goals include addressing practitioner and practice-level factors influencing the adoption, implementation fidelity, and effectiveness of alcohol screening and brief intervention in dental practice settings. (January 2010 – September 2011 )
Heart Healthy Data Analysis and Evaluation - Data entry, analysis, and reporting of survey data collected from Portsmouth Public Housing residents from the With Every Heartbeat is Life program. The goal is to increase knowledge of heart disease risk factors and promote health behaviors that prevent and control these heart disease risk factors. A pre-test and post-test survey is administered and collected for each session. A “My Health Habits” survey is also administered before and after completion of the course. (January 2010 – December 2010)
Services for Students with Emotional Disabilities Survey (Robert Gable & Steven Tonelson, ODU) – Management, data entry and data tracking responsibilities for mail survey data of Virginia educators (n=3400) and parents (n=185) documenting the current status of services for students with emotional disabilities in Virginia. Data will be used to propose a series of research-based steps to improve outcomes for students with emotional disabilities (ED) in Virginia. Also programmed and managed web-based survey of national experts regarding which initiatives for students with emotional disabilities they are implementing in their state, how widespread the initiative is in their state, and barriers to effective intervention. (January – May, 2010).
GrowSmart Virginia Beach Young Parent’s Survey – Development of a self-administered survey instrument and data entry of survey data for a small group of parenting and pregnant teens. The survey will be used to help a local task force improve the healthy development of babies born to teenage parents in Virginia Beach as part of a Smart Beginnings grant. The task force will use the data collected from the survey to identify gaps in services for pregnant or parenting teens and to improve service delivery in general. (March – June, 2010).

Infant and Toddler Connection of Virginia Family Survey -- Mail and telephone survey of 5800 families in Virginia regarding the services provided to infants and toddlers to address developmental delays and disabilities. (August -- December 2010)
2009
Kellogg Foundation Civic Engagement Project –Data collection and analysis of the use of funding for Kellogg Foundation's Civic Engagement Learning Year grants including: interviews with grant recipients, site visits, and collection of secondary data and analysis of program reports and evaluations to determine effective use of grant funding by communications, philanthropy, and human services nonprofit organizations to build human capital and promote civic engagement. Grantees were interviewed to obtain feedback about their experiences with their civic engagement projects. (January – March, 2009).
Student National Household Transportation Survey (NHTS) (Asad Khattak, ODU) - web survey and follow-up phone calls to Old Dominion University students regarding their travel patterns and behaviors that are collected nationally through the National Household Travel Survey (NHTS). Conducted on behalf of the Virginia Department of Transportation and in conjunction with three other Virginia Universities (VCU, UVA, and VT). Data to be used by travel demand forecasters to predict travel demand and use for Virginia college students. Methodological paper presented at the 65th Annual American Association of Public Opinion Research in Chicago, IL. (January, 2009 - February, 2010)

Virginia Office of the Inspector General Mental Health Facility Survey -- Teleform survey and document development, scanning and anlysis to assist data collection efforts of Virginia's mental health facilities within the 40 Community Services Boards (CSBS). Data used to assess the range, nature, and other characteristics of Virginia's public community mental health, mental retardation, and substance abuse services for children and adolescents. ROSS Evaluation -- Data collection and analysis of Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority resident cases files for the Resident Opportunities and Self-Sufficiency (ROSS) program.
