Graduate Tuition and Graduate Assistantships
Graduate tuition for a full-time student is approximately $6,084 a year for in-state students ($338 per credit hour) and approximately $15,192 a year for out-of-state students ($844 per credit hour). Students must be full-time and registered for 9 credit hours to be eligible to receive assistantship support. Students may enroll in the program on a full-time (9 credit hours per fall/spring semester) or part-time basis (6 credit hours per fall/spring semester).
The Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at Old Dominion University supports several teaching and research assistantship positions. In return for the financial support, graduate students work and 20 hours per week for faculty members depending on the assistantship awarded. Assistants work from the beginning of each semester through exam week or an equivalent period of time. Along with the rest of the faculty, they enjoy a break at Thanksgiving, December holidays, and Spring Break.
Assistantships are available to a few select graduate students who have shown dedication in their undergraduate and graduate studies. Teaching and research assistantships are valuable in the sense that they foster strong relationships with faculty and provide the student with the opportunity to get a real feel for academic life.
To apply, submit an Application for Graduate Financial Assistance to the Ph.D. Program Director no later than January 15. Full-time graduate assistants are considered in-state students for tuition purposes.
Students interested in other forms of financial aid such as loans or need-based work study should contact the Old Dominion University Office of Student Financial Aid.
