Department of Political Science and Geography

Programs of Study in Political Science and Geography

The Department of Political Science and Geography offers undergraduate degrees in Political Science and Geography, as well as International Studies. Also, at the graduate level, the department offers, through Graduate Programs in International Studies, a master's degree and a doctor of philosophy degree. For the requirements of the latter degrees, refer to the Graduate Programs in International Studies section of the university catalog.

In Political Science, the department offers both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. These programs are designed to give students an essential core of basic knowledge and analytical skills while providing an opportunity to specialize in one of two emphasis areas: American Politics and Public Law, or International Relations and Comparative Politics.

In Political Science, the department also offers a joint degree program with Philosophy.  This program allows the student to double major in Political Science and Philosophy or to major in one and minor in the other.

In Geography, the department offers both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. The Geography program is designed to give students a broad base of geographical training and an understanding of human-environment interrelationships, while providing an opportunity to specialize in one of the two emphasis areas: Urban Geography, or Environment and Resources.

In addition to improving students' writing skills, students' verbal competency skills are improved through in-class discussions and in most 400-level courses in Political Science and Geography through in-class oral presentations in class. Students also gain technological skills in lower- and upper-level methods classes where computers are employed for data analysis and social science research.

Undergraduate students may earn honors in the major in Political Science or Geography by fulfilling all the requirements for the specific degree (B.A. and B.S.) and meeting the indicated honors requirements. The requirements for Honors do not increase the credit hours necessary for the major.
