Saxophonist Jeff Smith is a native of Portsmouth, Virginia. Mr. Smith earned his Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies from William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ, and an undergraduate degree in Music Education from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. Smith is active as a performer and educator throughout the Hampton Roads area. In addition, he serves as the Jazz/Big Band Coordinator at the Governor's School for the Arts in Norfolk and a music instructor at Tallwood High School in Virginia Beach. Smith has also been an instructor at the Litchfield Summer Jazz Workshop in Litchfield, CT, and the Chesapeake Public Schools Summer Jazz Camp in Chesapeake, VA. He has performed with the American Saxophone Quartet, several Broadway show tour companies including The Producers, All that Jazz, and Chicago; the Virginia and Richmond Symphony Pops, Virginia and Richmond Ballet Companies, The Temptations, The O'Jays, Tommy Newsom, Glenn Wilson, John D'earth, Clark Terry, Frank Foster, Don Braden, Bill Mobley, John Toomey, Steve Wilson, and Howard Curtis. In 2001, Jeff and guitarist Woody Beckner released At First Glance, a recording of all original compositions. Smith and Beckner teamed up again for live recordings in 2004 and in 2005 with vocalist Laura Martier. These recordings are set for release later this year.
