23rd Annual Harold Protsman Classical Period Piano Competition
The Department of Music of Old Dominion University will hold its 23rd annual Harold Protsman Classical Period Piano Competition Saturday, March 20, 2010. Preliminaries will begin at 9:00 a.m., and renowned pianist Lambert Orkis will judge the final competition at 2:30 pm. All events will be held in the F. Ludwig Diehn Center for the Fine and Performing Arts, corner of 49th St. and Elkhorn Avenue.
In 2007, the Old Dominion University Classical Period Piano Competition was renamed in honor of Professor Emeritus Harold Protsman in recognition of his many years of dedication, professionalism and service to both the competition and the Music Department of Old Dominion University.
Pianist and Teacher Lambert Orkis will give a master class for selected finalists in Chandler Recital Hall at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 21. Also at 3 p.m., cellist David Hardy will conduct a string master class in the Reading Room of the Diehn Composers Room. At 5 p.m., pianists and string performers will convene for a master class on musical collaboration in Chandler Hall. Read more about Lambert Orkis and David Hardy here.
The F. Ludwig Diehn Concert Series will feature pianist Lambert Orkis and cellist David Hardy in a recital at 8 p.m. Monday, March 22, in Wilson Chandler Recital Hall, Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center. Mr. Orkis will perform on a reproduction of a 6-1/2 octave Bethoven-period fortepiano of ca. 1830. Tickets for this event are available in the lobby of the University Theatre Monday - Friday, 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., telephone 683.3505; or in the atrium of the Diehn Center on the day of the event.
