College of Arts & LettersWorld Languages & Cultures

Our Mission

Our goal is to prepare students for today's globalized marketplace with foreign-language abilities and intercultural expertise. Our students acquire excellent written and verbal communication skills in the target language and culture, and in doing so they also gain a better understanding of their own community.

It is no surprise that students with a foreign language degree are better equipped for the job market. Through our internationally recognized faculty, interdisciplinary curriculum, support of the Language Learning Center and real world practice and study abroad opportunities, these skills are gained quite naturally in our liberal arts and humanities program.

Solidarity Statement

The Department of World Languages and Cultures is outraged by the manifestations of structural racism and inequality that we have been seeing play out time and again in our country. We stand in solidarity with protesters and with all those who have suffered from all forms of state-sanctioned violence and inequality. As members of a diverse educational department, college and university, we must renew our commitment to actively undo structures that hinder full participation of Black students, colleagues, community, and family members. We oppose ignorance and hatred that animates racism and seek to promote social justice for all.
