Department Goals and Mission

 

Our goal is to prepare students for today’s globalized marketplace with foreign-language abilities and intercultural expertise.  Our students acquire excellent written and verbal communication skills in the target language and culture, and in doing so they also gain a better understanding of their own community.  So it is no surprise that students with a foreign language degree are better equipped for the job market.  Foreign Languages & Literatures frequently hosts a series of seminars, special events and lectures dealing with cultural, political, social and historical topics attracting an audience from various departments and programs at Old Dominion University.

WORKSHOP FOR PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS: Mr. Isidoro Kessel will be presenting a conference entitled, "True Differetiation: Creating Multiple Paths for Learning." This is a workshop for CNU and VCU pre-service teachers on April 4 from 4:00-6:00 pm at the Jefferson Room at Christopher Newport University. There is no cost involved.

Congratulations to our German students who are presenting their research papers at the Undergraduate Conference in German Studies held on March 24, 2012 at Lafayette College, Easton, Pennsylvania. Alena Jones will be presenting in German, "Befreiung von der Familiengeschichte" and Sabine Smithers also presenting in German, "Der Orient: Traumhaftes Märchen und beängstigende Realität."

Zachary Fitzpatrick will be representing Old Dominion University with his poster "Der blaue Reiter: Vorgänger der modernen Kunst." Dr. Heidi Schlipphacke has been their mentor and advisor and will be accompanying them to the conference. Thank you Alena, Sabine and Zachary and best wishes.

Come cheer on our ODU students who will sing songs in Japanese: 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. It is estimated that the event will have 1500 attendees. For more information, call 757-385-2990.


Save the Date: Fri., April 13, 4-6 p.m. at the Alumni Center. Join us for our Visiting Alumni Lecture Series. Invited alumni will speak on how they have made their language skills useful.
