The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at Old Dominion University can help you meet your academic, professional and personal goals through the language, culture and literature courses we teach in a wide variety of languages and in English (FLET). Advanced language preparation is extended to students in many diverse fields, such as International Studies (BAIS and GPIS), International Business, (BSBA), the College of Nursing, etc. Many students are realizing that language preparation is fast becoming an integral part of their professional preparation; it is what sets them apart from other job candidates who have little or no language or cultural studies. Even if you do not intend to use a foreign language in your career, you still need to know what is happening in a world which is becoming economically, politically and sociologically more interesting and more important to our daily lives. If you think that you are not a "language student," at least give yourself the opportunity to know what language study is all about. You may be surprised. I promise that you will always come away from a class with an appreciation of language skills and a deeper understanding of the culture of the people who speak the foreign language You will already have achieved an important goal. I welcome you to the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures as you are initiating your study of a language which is meaningful to you or as you continue your study of a foreign language or languages.
