Description:Jews in Europe, 1840-1940 traces the history of European
Jews from involvement in the Damascus Affair blood libel case of 1840 to persecution with the enactment of racial laws on the eve of World War II.Lectures and readings will address topics including civil emancipation, assimilation, integration, religiosity and tradition, anti-Semitism and persecution against a backdrop of cultural, political, and economic developments in Europe.The course will explore Jewish identity related to the rise of European nation states, the evolution of racial theories and ideas of social science, and the development of Jewish ideas of nation, Zionism, and social responsibility.
