Introduction

Management professionals throughout the country state that the number one need for organizations in the twenty-first century will be professionals with communication skills. Organizations ranging from engineering and technical operations, to human services are looking for people who can communicate effectively. Old Dominion University designed its Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies with an emphasis in Professional Communication to meet this need by preparing individuals to excel in any professional business environment.

The degree was also designed to meet the needs of various populations, including traditional and non-traditional students, and individuals working in positions of influence who are interested in expanding their repertoire of skills. Offered through ODU's TELETECHNET system, in partnership with community colleges throughout Virginia, the program offers a unique learning experience and is especially sensitive to the needs and experiences of adult learners. With televised and video-streamed classes delivered in the evening and on weekends, the program offers its students in even the most remote locations an opportunity to earn a degree while working.

Program Overview

The Professional Communication degree will develop skill in three primary areas:

• Interpersonal and Organization Communication, including the examination of small group processes and functions, and team building;
• Professional Writing, promoting compositional skills, and scientific and managerial writing
• Marketing, Management and Public Relations, providing a basic understanding and skill level within these three disciplines

Recognizing the evolving multicultural workforce and strength of organizations that support diversity, the Professional Communication major also offers coursework in Intercultural Communication and Communication Between the Sexes.
