How to Do It

Use the Printer to Scan to .pdf:

  1. Swipe id. card to start machine, as normal.
  2. Touch "Done" on display screen until you find the regular "copy" menu.
  3. At the top of the display screen find four options
    • copy
    • fax
    • mailbox
    • scan
  4. Touch "scan"
  5. A dialog box appears indicating the machine is "offline." It says "Press the Online key to use the scanner." Don't do this!
  6. Instead, find the Arrow at the top right of the display screen. Touch that.
  7. Place your document on the glass platen or in the document feeder. Then touch "Scan and Mail."
  8. You now see a green "copy" button inside the display screen, along with several other options.
    • If you placed your documents in the feeder or on the glass platen, the machine has already grabbed them and scanned them at this point.
    • If you have not given the machine your documents yet, it scanned a page of nothing.
      • Delete that blank page using the virtual button marked with a rustic "X" on the display screen.
  9. The machine now operates pretty much like the copier we all know and love, except that all controls, including the "copy" button, are located on the display screen.
  10. Scan away and come back for the next step.

Sending your document to yourself

Scanned .pdf documents can be emailed to anyone with an @odu.edu email address. They cannot be emailed outside of the ODU system, however.

  1. When finished scanning, touch "Send" on the display screen.
  2. First you must tell the machine who you are. The default is Prof. Aardvark. Using the keyboard on the touch screen, enter your Midas id. Do not touch "Enter"! (See step 3).
    • Tip: The touch screen is slow, and it does not beep nor does it register the letter you just touched immediately.
Fear not: if you think you touched a letter, you did. The machine will catch up in a few seconds. Just continue entering your Midas id and wait for the machine to register.
    • If you touched a letter twice, the "Backspace" key is the Left Aarow beside the "=" key.
    • If your fingers are too pudgy for that puny screen, you can touch the "keys" with a pen.
  3. When your Midas id is safely entered, touch "Next" in the lower right (not "Enter" as you might expect)
  4. Enter your Midas password as above.
    • Now that you are an expert, the machine figures you don't need the feedback, so you see *** instead of letters.
    • Again, press "OK," not "Enter."
  5. At the Authentication screen touch "Next"
  6. Now you must tell the machine where to send the document. Probably you are sending it to yourself, so you must enter your email address. Follow the procedure as above.
    • Tip: OCCS did something right! There is a shortcut "@odu.edu" key in the lower right near the "OK" key, so you only have to enter your username and touch that key.
  7. When your email address is correctly entered, touch "OK."
  8. The display screen now offers a verification of the recipient, subject line in the email, etc. Touch "Send."
    • At this point you can add other addresses to the recipient list, but for that you are on your own.
  9. Your work is finished, but now the machine must do its work: The display screen should say "Building master document" followed by "Sending..." and [prayers are appropriate at this point, because sometimes it crashes here inexplicably], hopefully "Sent successfully."
  10. Touch "Done" or "New Document".
    • If you "New Document," at least the machine still has your Midas id, password, and recipient information. Everytime I try this, however, Prof. Aardvark gets added to my recipient list. This can be deleted though.
  11. Don't forget to press F3 to log your id card out of the swipe box.
