Blocking

Blocking or chunking is like an informal outline or a set of rough blueprints that represent intentions for a draft. It is one way of organizing prewriting material into a general outline for a paper by simultaneously looking at materials, their purpose, and audience expectations.

  1. How many blocks of material will I need for this paper
  2. What is each block supposed to do?
  3. What material goes into each block?
  4. What order for these chunks would best help my audience get through my paper?
  5. How much space roughly do I want each chunk to take up? (How much material do I have for each section and what can I assume that my audience already knows about the subject?-What do I want to say?)
  6. How do I want to develop each chunk? (How do I want to say it?-diagrams, pictures, charts, or words?)
