Dynamic and diverse student body

GPIS students come to ODU from diverse backgrounds. Many already have an M.A. (if entering a Doctoral program) or a B.A. (if entering an M.A. program), but students’ educational backgrounds are rich and varied. GPIS students have held previous degrees in the fields of Economics; History; Political Science; Linguistics; Geography; Sociology; Business Management; Foreign Languages; Communications; Literature; Creative Writing; and many more!

GPIS students also come to ODU from within the U.S. as well as from all over the world. Domestically speaking, GPIS has students from Virginia, Mississippi, Maine, Kentucky, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, and many other states. Internationally, GPIS excels at recruiting and welcoming students from all over the world, including Canada, China, Czech Republic, Colombia, Brazil, Venezuela, Philippines, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Egypt, France, India, Mongolia, Nepal, Japan, Thailand, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, Vietnam, Korea, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Russia, Jamaica, and many more! This variance in origin and educational background lends to a unique classroom experience and many, many opportunities for cultural exchanges and learning. For more information on current students, visit the Meet Our M.A.s  and Meet our Ph.D.s  pages on our website.

Some GPIS students already have working experience when they join the program, and some learn while they are here. Because of Norfolk’s large Naval presence, many are members of the military: Navy, Army, Coast Guard, Air Force, and Marines. Others have experience working in diplomacy or the non-profit sector, while still others come from academic teaching jobs both at American universities or schools overseas. Once in the program, many present their research results at regional and national conferences and some have published their work in academic journals. Click here  to see some of the many achievements of our current students. There are also many opportunities to gain on-the-job experience through internships. The Joint Forces Staff College, NATO, and  Civil-Military Fusion Center all regularly take on GPISers as interns.

No matter from where or what background you come to GPIS, you can be assured that you will leave with a world-class education and opportunities to work in many different fields. Visit out Alumni page to see what fields some of our recent graduates have entered.
