Meet the Officers
President: John Applebaugh
John Alan Applebaugh is the graduate assistant to the director of GPIS, Dr. Regina Karp. John graduated from the University of Minnesota in 2004 with a Bachelor's of Arts in History. He is currently enrolled in the Master's program for International Studies. In addition to serving as GSIS President, John also works with the International Topics Journal.
Vice President: Emily Schott

Emily has been working on her Masters degree in International Studies at Old Dominion University and will finish in May 2008. While completing her graduate work Emily interned at the Joint Forces Staff College for four semesters, assisting in course research, development, and occasionally role-playing in war gaming exercises. She is involved in her graduate program as well, serving as the Vice President of the Graduate Society for International Studies. Her undergraduate work was in International Affairs at the University of Mary Washington. At the University of Mary Washington Emily had the good fortune of meeting her fiancé Adam Nash, a middle school physical science teacher. The couple is looking forward to their nuptials taking place this July.
Development Officer: Haci "Ozzy" Gunduz
Hacı Osman Gündüz aka Ozzy is currently an MA student in International Studies. Ozzy graduated from Atatürk University with a BA in Arabic Language and Literature. Ozzy is a graduate assistant for the Division of Student Affairs and Multicultural Student Services.
Secretary/Treasurer: Melodee Baines
In 2002 Melodee Baines earned a BA in Modern Languages and Linguistics from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. A Fulbright scholar, she speaks French, German and Arabic and recently completed a comprehensive research project as a US State Department Critical Language Scholar in Jordan. In the fall of 2008 Melodee begins her final year as a doctoral fellow in the Graduate Program in International Studies at Old Dominion University, concentrating in global political economy and the Middle East. She plans to return to the Middle East to continue studying Arabic while completing her dissertation.
Social Activities Officer: Kimberly Van Dyke
Kimberly Van Dyke is a first year PhD student. In 2003, Kimberly graduated with her B.S. from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Troy, NY). She has worked in nuclear safeguards at the International Atomic Energy Agency and at Los Alamos National Lab. This past summer she was a student associate with Harvard's Managing the Atom Project. She is currently the Communications Officer for the International Topics Journal and is the graduate assistant to Dr. Regina Karp, the director of GPIS. Her research interests are in nonproliferation and nuclear strategy.
Graduate Assistant student liaison: JoAnne Hakala-Applebaugh
JoAnne Hakala-Applebaugh is the graduate assistant to the International Topics Journal and the Graduate Society for International Studies. JoAnne holds a Bachelor of Science in Individualized Studies from the University of Minnesota. She received her degree in May 2004 and specialized in History, Educational Psychology, and Aerospace Studies. Additionally, JoAnne holds a Certificate in Advanced International Affairs from the Bush School of Government and Public Service from Texas A&M University. In addition to her current pursuits as a student in the Master's Program in International Studies at Old Dominion University, JoAnne is also the administrator for the International Topics Journal.
