Fellowships & financial aid

To be eligible for any form of assistance, students must first be admitted to the degree program in regular (not provisional) status. ODU offers research and teaching assistantships, fellowships, grants, and scholarships. Most forms of aid require recipients to engage in full-time graduate study.

While a few awards are need-based, most are competitive, and academic achievement is the major consideration. Graduate teaching and research assistants are charged tuition at the in-state rate.

Fellowships

GPIS offers a number of assistantships to each year's entering class of Ph.D. students. Some Research/Teaching assistantships are also available for M.A. candidates. Applicants should specify that they wish to be considered in competition for these awards when completing application materials and in cover letters.

Financial aid

Applications for financial aid can be obtained upon request from the Office of Financial Aid. Applicants considering assistance should request forms when applying. Inquiries should be made as early as possible since decisions regarding financial assistance are made early in the calendar year. The Office of Financial Aid is also the source of student loans. Applicants should have submitted their applications and all supporting materials no later than February 15 to be considered for financial assistance.   Information about financial aid for graduate students can be found at the Office of Graduate Studies.
