Dr. Angelica J. Huizar, Associate Director of GPIS and Associate Professor of Spanish, received her doctorate in Spanish with a focus on Latin American literature and a Minor in Gender Studies from the University of California Irvine. She has lived and worked abroad in Brazil, Spain and Mexico.
Since 2003 she has served as Assistant Professor and now as Associate Professor at ODU and taught Latin American culture and civilization, surveys on Latin American literature, seminars on Latin American poetry and performance, Latin American theater, and Latino/a literature. Until her recent promotion to GPIS, she directed the Latin American Studies Program at ODU. An expert in avant-garde Latin American poetics, she has authored several refereed publications and presented more than forty professional conference papers in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Her book entitled, Beyond the Page: Latin American Poetry from the Calligramme to the Virtual (Academica Press, 2008), focuses on the aesthetic and theoretical relationships between art, music, sound, visual typography and the word in avant-garde poetry including digital poetics of Mexico, Uruguay, Chile, Peru and Brazil. Her most recent research interests center on digital poetics and aesthetics as a cultural study of the effects of globalization.
In addition to her position at ODU, Dr. Huizar volunteers her time serving on the Advisory Board for the Virginia Latino Higher Education Network (VALHEN) and as Mentor in Symposiums sponsored by the Hispanic College Fund.
