Requirements

To access forms and specific information for graduation, refer to the MFA Student Guide. 

  • 12 hours of literature (British, American, or World) 
  • Craft of Narrative (or)
  • Craft of Poetry 
  • Workshop

Electives

  • Any 3 literature courses beyond required courses
  • 2 creative writing workshops (650)
  • Any 2 other approved electives
  • 3 (one-credit) Writer-in-Residency workshops (Eng 596) may count as an elective or as a substitute for another course with program director's permission.
  • Writer-in-Community internship

Only 39 of the required 54 credit hours are taken up with specifically required course work, leaving 15 hours to be determined by the student.

* Students should not take more than 12 hours of 500-level courses without a written exemption from the Graduate Program Director.

* Students may take thesis hours after they have completed 30 credits.
