Works in Progress: Whitewash by Manuela Mourão Whitewash is a multidisciplinary exploration of the sixteenth-century Portuguese maritime expansion, its impact on the Portuguese concept of race, and the contemporary ramifications of this historic legacy. Through an installation that will include paintings, digital photos, a personal essay, and a scholarly article, this project will comment on the Portuguese colonial enterprise and on how it has been celebrated and archived in the nation’s collective unconscious--with the attendant implications for the Portuguese concept of whiteness. These paintings are part of the project; others will be posted as I finish them, as will the digital photographs documenting the monuments and exhibits celebrating the Discoveries.
