Master of Arts in English, Teaching of English Option

This option requires:

  • Three hours in British Literature before 1800
  • Three hours in British Literature after 1800 or Postcolonial Literature
  • Three hours in American Literature
  • Three hours of Research and Theory, ENGL 600
  • Three hours of Writing Pedagogy from ENGL 555 or 664
  • Three hours of Teaching Colloquium, ENGL 687
  • Three hours of Rhetoric from ENGL 667 or 669
  • Three hours of Linguistics
  • Six hours of electives

Graduate Certificate in the Teaching of Writing

Easily completed in one calender year, this certificate gives students who already hold at least a master's degree in a different field the 18 hours of gradute study in the teaching of writing that are the minimum requirement for teaching that subject at the post-secondary level in Virginia. Requirements are:

  • Three hours of Rhetoric from ENGL 667 or 669
  • Three hours of Writing Pedagogy from ENGL 555 or 664
  • Three hours of Teaching Colloquium, ENGL 687
  • Nine hours of English electives in Rhetoric, Professional Writing, Journalism, Linguistics or Creative Writing
  • Note: at least nine of the 18 hours must be at the 600-level.
