Master of Arts in English Literature Option

  • 3 hours Brit Lit before 1800
  • 3 hours Brit Lit or New Literatures in English after 1800
  • 3 hours in Am Lit before 1800
  • 3 hours in Am Lit after 1800

Electives (9 hours, at least 6 hours in Literature)


Graduate Certificate in Literature

Easily completed in one calender year, this certificate gives students who already hold at least a master's degree in a different field the 18 hours of gradute study in literature that are the minimum requirement for teaching that subject at the post-secondary level in Virginia. Requirements are:

  • Three hours in British Literature before 1800
  • Three hours in British Literature after 1800 or Postcolonial Literature
  • Three hours in American Literature
  • Nine hours of electives in literature (which may inlcude ENGL 600 and 663)
  • Note: at least nine of the 18 hours must be at the 600-level.
