Changing gallery               Andrew Breitenberg, SELAH

Andrew Breitenberg produces art in the townships of South Africa under the street name SELAH, derived from the Hebrew "pause here, and reflect on that." He draws symbols and texts in alleys, townships, street corners, and on rusting refuse. His goal is to contribute toward the dignity of township residents and to write the story of their hope and bravery. Selah's art is rooted in relationship, dialogue, conversational pauses, and pouring tea. The content of the work is already present on site, and must only be illuminated, or, brought to light. His art curates and publishes the dialogue that occurs between the artist and the subject - often, the owner of the wall being painted. This method reflects the values of the African communities in which the work takes place. His exhibition will feature original drawings and prints, along with documentary photographs of his on-site work in the townships. He will also perform a unique mural in the exterior display wall of the gallery.

Opening reception, 7 p.m. May 19
