String Monuments: An Installation by Annett Lawrence
Jan 16th - Mar 14th, 2010 -
Annette Lawrence's String Monuments, is part of an ongoing body of work that originated in 1994 at Project Row Houses in Houston, Texas. Her work is generally related to text and information, often in response to physical space and time. It is grounded in autobiography, counting, and the measurement of everyday life. Her string installations are a response to architecture as monumental text. The string presents a visual lightness, balanced by the substantial physicality and scale of the work. References to lattice, woven vessels, suspension bridges, and musical instruments often emerge.
Lawrence's subjects of inquiry range from body cycles, to ancestor portraits, music lessons, and unsolicited mail. Other String Installations by Lawrence have been installed in Johannesburg, South Africa; Ann Arbor; New York; and Dallas.

Repurpose: a Graphic Design Invitational Exhibition
Mar 20th - Apr 18th, 2010 -
"Repurposes" is an exhibition that presents work devoted to reexamining and reengaging convictions or finding new uses for what has been produced. The show proposes the rehabilitation of meanings that have been lost of disfigured instead of crafting new doctrines for how we should regard our world and ourselves; to face the overproduction of material culture and its implications for our self and the environment and how we might employ and transform the abundant objects and imagery that already exists. The show asks the question, "in a time of historic change and challenge-politically, economically, technologically-how do we remake ourselves?"
Opening reception 7 p.m. March 20
The Book of Daniel: a new installation of work from the Baron and Ellin Gordon Self-taught collection
Apr 10th - Oct 17th, 2010 -
The Book of Daniel examines a major evangelical theme that underlies much of the religious content in self-taught art. Some evangelicals believe the Old Testament prophet Daniel foretells of the Apocalypse that will precede the Second Coming and subsequent Judgment. Central to this narrative is the need to be saved. These works included in this show exhibit the range of ways the theme can be imagined by self-taught artists. A monumental Head of Christ by artist Feddy Brice powerfully illustrates the moment Christ's suffering makes redemption possible. Louisianian Royal Robertson, admonishes a sinful world through his obsessive themes of sex and betrayal in "Astonishment to Glory
" Damnation, however, can have its humor. Ronald Cooper of Kentucky hilariously depicts the devil torturing humans on a truck titled Hell Vehicle/Hell Bound and in a miniature space heater full of hell fire titled Hell Heater. This show's installation draws from the Gordon's' gift to ODU and works from their personal collection.
