History

American Studies began after World War II when scholars sought new ways to investigate the culture or cultures of the United States from such traditional fields as political history, social analysis, or literary and arts criticism.  These scholars brought together insights from social sciences, history, literature, and the arts to fashion a methodology that seeks to understand how Americans not only define themselves but how American culture is created and in turn influences its own history as well the cultural practices of other countries.
